MCCID has continued its pioneering work in advancing the IT education for the deaf in the Philippines by showcasing its own developed technologies during the consultation workshop spearheaded by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NCDA) from November 28-29, 2018.
Held at Bayview Park Hotel in Manila, MCCID Deaf Trainor Moises Libot explained the assistive technologies to the deaf to participants from the disability sector, government agency representatives, higher education institutions as well as local companies and inventors of disability related products. He also pointed out the barriers experienced by deaf and hard-of-hearing learners in accessing information.
On Sir Moises’ topic “How Assistive Technologies can Increase Learning and Independence of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners”, he introduces the three creative designs of MCCID which are as follows:
- FILIPINO SIGN LANGUAGE FONT FOR WINDOWS – Started as a project/competition in their Diploma in Arts and Computer Design Technology course in 2010, each student were tasked to design a hand sign of each keys in the regular computer keyboard. In the end, Jennyfer Cahilig won and received a cash prize. FSL Font has been updated and modified in 2018 and is now called FSL Font 2. The font may be downloaded by clicking this link.
- FILIPINO SIGN LANGUAGE MOBILE APP FOR ANDROID – Launched in February 2018, his app teaches you how to fingerspell using Filipino Sign Language. It also teaches you how to sign the Philippine National Anthem in FSL. It currently has more than 1,000 active downloads. The app may be downloaded by clicking this link.
- FREE ONLINE COURSE ON DEAF SENSITIVITY TRAINING – This is an online e-learning course where you can enroll for FREE!!! This training helps you understand and become aware about how to deal with the deaf people. To know more about the course, please go to this link.

Dubbed “Consultation Workshop on the Development of Manual on How to Establish a Disability Support Unit in Higher Education Institutions”, the activity was an offshoot of the re-entry action plan of NCDA Officer Virginia Rabino from her graduate course which she took as a scholarship grant from Australia.
